Tony holds a Master's Degree in both Blue Cheese and Cheddar Cheese. Wisconsin and Switzerland are the only places in the world where a cheesemaker can get a Master’s degree. In Wisconsin a person has to have had a cheesemaker’s license for at least 10 years to apply to the program. There are several courses that are required and the cheesemaker’s cheese is evaluated every year to make sure it meets strict program requirements. At the end of the course work the applicant has to pass a rigorous test that takes about 35 to 40 hours. Once the cheesemaker has passed all of the requirements they receive a Master’s Degree in that particular style of cheese.
Hook's Cheese has received numerous awards for its cheese. Most notably, in 1982 Hook's Colby placed "Best of Class" in the Coby and Monterey Jack category and moved forward to win the overall "World Champion Cheese". Julie Hook is the only woman to have ever received this prestigious award.
